Kona Kahlua is a mid-century accommodation with a long history placed on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. Kona Kahlua approached Studio Thomas Hatton to create a brand identity that reflected the essence of the accommodation’s pristine mid-century features—that could be rolled out across printed and digital mediums. The visual identity is inspired by German Bauhaus design, which was the key influencer of the mid-century modern movement—emphasizing clean lines, functionality and a modernist look. The concept and visual identity reference key factors of this movement such as, minimalism, mixing materials/aesthetics and the use of natural hues with bursts of colour. The identity’s graphic system uses a geometric square, common throughout mid-century and Bauhaus design, as the starting point to create a strict 5×5 grid that sets the foundations for all visual communications. The letter form ‘K’ is introduced to create visual markers for the composition of content. The roll-out included glossy foil stamped print collateral such as coasters, welcome cards, envelopes and postcards, website design and development, creative direction and design for social communications and digital assets and more.
